Mount Kilimanjaro is located in Tanzania.  It is the highest mountain in all of Africa at 19,334 feet above sea level.  To put it in another perspective, that is over 3.6 miles high.  You want the hike of a lifetime, well here you are.  Mount Kilimanjaro is also the highest freestanding mountain and the 4th most prominent in the entire world.

Mount Kilimanjaro has three volcanic cones called Kibo, Mawenzi and Shira.  Kibo is the highest of the three at 19,341 feet and the Uhuru Peak is its highest summit.  Mount Kilimanjaro itself is a stratovolcano that first started forming over a million years ago.  This occurred when the Rift Valley zone started spilling lava.  Of the three volcanic cones, Mawenzi and Shira are extinct, but Kibo is dormant and could erupt at some point again.  The last time this volcano had a major eruption was over 360,000.  Even the most recent volcanic activity of any kind was recorded more than 200 years ago, long before any of us were here.

Many legends have been known to surround Mount Kilimanjaro that have been around for many years.  The mountain provides a sense of awe to those that view it and it manages to continue to be a spectacle even in the modern world.  The immense, snow-covered mountain is one of the most famous places in the whole world.  To the people that live in the area, the mountain represents power and provides fertile soil for agriculture as well as various springs for pure water.  Mount Kilimanjaro truly is a sight to behold.
